I had spine surgery but was very interested in taking up Yoga.

Friends suggested Hatha yoga, as the moves are progressive. Mose pleaces teaching yoga would be able to advise what you could try by the level of difficulty and your body condition.

If you have any injuries, you may also wish to research on Pilates. It's very low strain and helps to tone core muscles + the breathing techniques helps with stress.

Most studios in my area offer an intro series of classes for people new to yoga. It lasts three to four weeks and meets once a week for an hour to an hour and a half. This is an excellent way to begin as it will give you a firm foundation to begin exploring other classes. I always encourage beginners to look for a class that offers a lot of instruction. Classes that are described as vinyasa or flow usually offer little or no instruction, so I would stay away from them for the first few months. Classes called hatha, classical, or gentle may be a good starting place to continue learning the basics.

Namaste!
